This week I'm joined by the legendary Sally Timms & Jon Langford of The Mekons to discuss not only their music documentary The Revenge Of The Mekons but the iconic film Trances about the Moroccan band Nass El Ghiwane (which was the first film Martin Scorsese restored as part of his World Cinema Project).
We discuss the mixed feelings both bands had regarding being the subject of a documentary, breaking open the various myths about The Mekons, coming out of the \"Elf Rock\" of the early 70s and the inevitability of punk rock being created, Dub music being omnipresent in pre-punk, The Buzzcocks as an influence, Northern England weirdo bands, Bob Last of Fast Product signing the band (which made The Mekons break their own strict rule of not recording after their first show), The Mekons meeting musicologist Bill Leader (the Alan Lomax of british folk music), how the band makes music through subtraction, taking older traditions and bending them to your will, what resonated with them about the film Trances and how the film tells the story through the poetic imagery vs. talking heads, were The Mekons supposed to be in the iconic music concert film Urgh A Music War and more!
