A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Baqen County in Nagqu, in Chinaโs Xizang Autonomous Region, late Thursday, October 22, 2026. The powerful tremor damaged hundreds of homes and triggered an emergency response across the affected area.
According to reports published on October 23, at least 16 people had died. The number of injured was initially reported as 54, with later reports from local authorities raising the figure to 76. Rescue and damage assessments were continuing as emergency teams worked to reach affected communities.
Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered all-out search-and-rescue efforts, calling for people trapped by the earthquake to be found and injured residents to receive prompt medical treatment. He also stressed the need to minimize casualties and provide assistance to people affected by the disaster.
China upgraded its national earthquake emergency response from Level IV to Level III. Rescue teams, emergency vehicles and relief supplies were dispatched to the region, while authorities coordinated operations to assess damage and support residents.
The earthquake caused extensive damage, with reports indicating that at least 339 homes had collapsed or been damaged. More than 12,000 residents were reportedly evacuated to safer locations as authorities worked to provide temporary shelter and essential supplies.
Relief materials included tents, folding beds, quilts and prefabricated housing units. Rescue teams also deployed drones to help survey the affected area and assess conditions on the ground.
The earthquake struck a remote, mountainous region at high altitude, where cold temperatures and forecast snowfall could make rescue work more difficult. Aftershocks and damage to roads have also raised concerns about access to affected communities.
Authorities continue to focus on locating survivors, treating the injured, delivering emergency supplies and helping displaced residents.
Search-and-rescue operations and damage assessments are continuing. Casualty figures may change as officials receive further information from affected areas.
