For more than a century, art lovers have debated whether the swirling sky in Vincent van Gogh’s famous 1889 painting, The Starry Night, came mainly from imagination or from something he actually observed.
A new study published in Scientific Reports on October 22, 2026, offers a fresh explanation: the painting may have been inspired by a real celestial arrangement visible before dawn on July 22, 1889, near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in southern France.
This article summarises published scientific research and reporting from the sources listed above. The proposed date and celestial interpretation are research findings, not definitive proof of when the painting was completed.
