Blake, a Magician, goes to buy a hat in a hatter's shop, and there is an attempted robbery which escalates into a full-blown hostage situation, and Blake is a superhero Sorcerer in disguise as his public persona, so he can't use real magic without coming out as Blue Midnight, a superhero he is recognised as his stage persona, an illusionist Blake Fire and told not to do any tricks or the shop owner will die. He is the only chance to escape, but he can't use magic or come out as a semi-dead Grim Reaper, or his empire will fall. He must use his wits and luck.
