Welcome to the first episode of the Winds of Change Podcast. This podcast tells the story of the Winds of Change project which is working to instal a wing-sail onto a ship. Wind propulsion, sometimes called wind assist, systems are increasingly being seen as a way for modern shipping to use wind to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels (fuel oils and marine diesel).
Through the story of the Winds of Change podcast this series will highlight the passion and drive to introduce new technologies into an industry which is famously slow to adapt to change, and why such solutions are needed.
Narrator and host Craig Eason talks to the people in the project to understand the technology, to hear what needs to be done to build a system that has never been built before and convince a shipowner that it is perfectly sensible to put it on their vessel.
In this episode he talks to Diane Gilpin from Smart Green Shipping, who is undoubtedly the force for change in the project and to project partners Professor Dominic Hudson at Southampton UNiversity, about the history of modern wind propulsion and testing with models and Arun Pillai from Houlder a UK-based engineering and design firm about all the pre-work that needs to be done even before the detailed engineering can start.
