Through a lens of ecosystem services, Patteera Chantrasuriyarat, Ebba Gallon and Hans Lindbo explore how the green wedges of the Swedish capital can be the backbone for urban growth.

Together with Anna Maria Larsson from Ekologigruppen, they dive into how the green wedges of Stockholm sustain the city. In the episode they explore the history of the connection between urban planning and public health in Sweden and its connection to the Million program areas built between 1965 and 1975, The biannual police reports on vulnerable areas of Sweden, the effects of global warming for the Stockholm region, the concept of ecosystem services, and the “Svaga samband” report on the endangered parts of the green infrastructure in Stockholm. Through this, the Järva field is used as a case study of the green wedges, and as the site for envisioning the future.

With Anna Maria Larssons concerns about how the people of the city are losing touch with nature, we propose a strategy to densify identities and amplify ecosystem services within parts of the green wedges more narrow than 500m. We attempt to create synergistic edge effects between humans and non-humans alike. The strategy centers around carefully designing activity paths through the subtle connections in a situated way. This is to connect the built structures on either side whilst simultaniously attracting people into the wedge by offering legible activities within it. This way the subtle connections can act as wedge-foyers catalyzing a reciprocal relationship between nature and people.

References

Ekologigruppen.
