During the Edo period, tales of mysterious yokai prophesying danger began to sweep across Japan. First came the Amabiko, a three-legged monkey-like spirit predicting hard times. Later, off the coast of Higo, stories spread of the Amabie, a strange, glittering creature with three legs, long flowing hair, a bird’s beak, and mermaid scales, surfacing to warn humanity of an impending epidemic.
Over the centuries, the names and shapes shifted, but the core legend remained: a visitor from the deep foretelling doom. While most of these creatures faded into myth, one legend never truly died...
