A tiny plaque, carved from mammoth ivory was dated to around 30,000 BCE. On its surface, a human figure stands in a pose that some researchers believe represents the constellation Orion. Deep within caves from that same era, paintings depict other familiar celestial forms, like Taurus, occupying the ancient sky then just as they do now. While it is nearly impossible to trace the exact moment our ancestors first looked up and traced these glowing patterns of light, astrology grew directly out of their deep desire to understand the universe and read the will of the gods. Across the globe, early human cultures interpreted the sky through their own unique lenses - tying starry shapes to local flora and fauna, weaving them into existing folk legends, or building brand new myths around the shapes they saw.
