While a student at Manchester University, a friend invited him to write a text adventure which led him to work for the video game publishers US Gold and, later, Activision. In 1990 he co-founded Revolution Software in the North of England.</p><p><br></p><p>After releasing <strong>Lure of the Temptress</strong> and <strong>Beneath a Steel Sky</strong>, he began work on <strong>Broken Sword</strong>, a world-spanning adventure game starring the American patent lawyer, George Stobbart and his French girlfriend, Nicole Collard, a freelance journalist. The game had a witty script, was beautifully illustrated, and featured a soundtrack by Barrington Pheloung, the composer of the <strong>Inspector Morse</strong> TV series, who my guest first met over a game of cricket.</p><p><br></p><p>After Sony reluctantly brought the game to PlayStation, it became a smash hit, leading to a string of successful sequels. But the course has not always been easy. “The audience for adventure games is limited,” he once told me. “But that audience is incredibly loyal.”</p><p><br></p><p>Play the console:</p><p><br></p><ul><li><a href=\"https://arcadespot.com/game/galaxian/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Galaxian</a></li><li><a href=\"https://store.steampowered.com/app/388210/Day_of_the_Tentacle_Remastered/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Day of the Tentacle</a></li><li><a href=\"https://www.amazon.co.uk/Super-Mario-All-Stars-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B08HF8KKT6/ref=sr_1_2?crid=33GR5MBJQ4VLQ&amp;amp;keywords=Super%252BMario%252B64&amp;amp;qid=1701120698&amp;amp;sprefix=super%252Bmario%252B64%252Caps%252C86&amp;amp;sr=8-2&amp;amp;th=1&amp;_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=chewingpixels-21&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;linkId=3faa40a96d95c1f47a86cfe4caa980b0&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=6738\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Super Mario 64</a></li><li><a href=\"https://www.amazon.co.uk/Grand-Theft-Auto-Trilogy-Definitive/dp/B09K7XFFMS/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3GTVNDA2LRGJ2&amp;amp;keywords=Grand+Theft+Auto+remaster&amp;amp;qid=1701121506&amp;amp;sprefix=grand+theft+auto+remaster%252Caps%252C59&amp;amp;sr=8-1&amp;_encoding=UTF8&amp;tag=chewingpixels-21&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;linkId=7d8ba09abef9f111b954a9e6a9202897&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=6738\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Grand Theft Auto III</a></li><li><a href=\"https://playdead.com/games/inside/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Inside</a></li></ul><p><br></p><p>Thank you for listening to My Perfect Console.
