What if one ordinary wooden chair really could kill you?
The Busby Stoop Chair, also known as the Dead Man’s Chair, is one of Britain’s most infamous supposedly cursed objects. Legend claims that anyone who dares to sit in it is marked for death, and over the years the chair has been blamed for fatal accidents involving wartime airmen, builders, drivers and unsuspecting visitors.
But when you start digging into the history, the story becomes much stranger.
Tonight on WTAF Paranormal Case Files, Anne and Renata investigate the real story behind the Busby Stoop Chair. We travel back to North Yorkshire in 1702, where Thomas Busby murdered his father-in-law, Daniel Auty, before being executed and having his body displayed in chains beside the road.
But did Busby really curse his favourite chair before he died?
We investigate the alleged victims, the Second World War airmen who reportedly feared the chair, the deaths recalled by former landlord Tony Earnshaw, and why the chair was finally removed from the Busby Stoop Inn in 1978 and hung out of reach inside Thirsk Museum.
And then there's the rather enormous problem with the legend...
The chair may not have existed when Thomas Busby was alive.
So how did an apparently nineteenth-century chair become connected to a murderer executed more than a century earlier? Was there once another chair? Did the legend change over time? Or are we looking at an extraordinary example of folklore turning coincidence into a deadly curse?
