Hagsploitation, or narratives that root themselves in “crazy old woman” tropes, can be a lot of fun. They can also inspire a lot of cringe, particularly as we deal with the realities of aging and disability.
Crazy Old Lady, an Argentinian film (available on Shudder), brings something new to the table. Unlike other entries in this subgenre, the film allows us to both question and understand the reality of our central character. Throw in themes of caregiving and how ageism – and the hagsploitation genre as a whole – is built on our fears of aging and illness, and this movie is about a lot more than initially meets the eye.
