Rose Tang is a multidisciplinary artist, journalist, musician, and activist who went from being one of the leaders of the 1989 Tiananmen Square movement to reporting for CNN and the BBC. She later designed and taught a course on Chinese news media at Princeton University. She now fronts bands and organizes the Fuck Fascism Festival. She’s also a performer in Glowing, the new experimental ensemble feature film by director Beth B, and her latest LP, A White Horse Is Not a Horse (with Patrick Golden), is out now.
In this extensive interview with Tyler Nesler, Tang discusses her long family lineage of artmaking, her discovery of Western music and culture as a teenager, her formative experiences as a student organizer during the 1989 Tiananmen Square movement, her early experiences as an investigative journalist in Australia and later Hong Kong, her disillusionment working for major media companies, her transition back into art and music-making, the formation of the Fuck Fascism Festival, her unique experience working with Beth B on Glowing, and much more.
