The discussion also shifted to the NHL Draft, where Ahokas weighed in on projected No. 1 overall pick Gavin McKenna and Toronto's opportunity to select first overall later this month. He praised McKenna's elite vision and skill set, drawing comparisons to his experience coaching Juraj Slafkovský prior to being selected first overall by Montreal in 2022.
Additionally, Ahokas revealed that the Maple Leafs have not contacted him regarding their head coaching vacancy. He opened up about his own career aspirations, admitting that coaching in the NHL remains a long-term goal. With one year remaining on his contract in Kitchener, Ahokas discussed what could be next, including the possibility of pursuing opportunities in the American Hockey League as either a head coach or assistant.
