Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be preparing for life back in Britain, but physically returning to the UK is only the beginning. Behind the headlines lies a much harder problem for the Royal Family: deciding exactly where Harry fits, what role he could realistically occupy, and whether King Charles and Prince William can agree on a united strategy before negotiations with the Sussexes even begin. With Harry seeking reconciliation and renewed purpose, Meghan retaining her commercial independence, and William taking a considerably harder line on the Sussexes’ future, the Palace now needs something it has largely been able to avoid while Harry and Meghan were in America. That is, a clear, workable plan.
Part of that plan may already exist. Long before Megxit, Harry had been envisioned in a role centred around veterans, the Commonwealth, charitable work and Invictus. But restoring any formal royal role would require compromise over commercial work, security, titles, responsibilities and trust, with Prince William potentially holding the key to what happens next. From a formal royal endorsement of Invictus to a possible ambassadorial role and a carefully negotiated path back towards royal duties, Harry’s UK return could become less about recreating the past and more about building an entirely new position within the monarchy.
