My grandfather, my second parent, my biggest fan and the man named as my guardian on my birth certificate, is no longer with us. This is the most personal episode of Currently Cringing I’ve ever made. I talk about grief in a way I didn’t understand until I lived it: the panic attacks, the sleepless nights, and the moment I realized I couldn’t get through this alone. I cover anticipatory grief and why it didn’t prepare me at all, my fear of prolonged grief, and why I now see two therapists, one of them every day. I talk about grieving in India, where the whole community shows up, and then coming home to America and feeling the emptiness. I talk about my sister staying on the phone with me for seven hours a night, my girlfriends rallying around me, and my husband sleeping downstairs with the lights on so I wouldn’t be alone. I also talk about the privilege of having time to grieve when so many people are back at work three days later, and why we need to stop putting deadlines on grief. This is also a love letter to a grandfather who lived a full life, not just a long one, and who left me decades of letters, emails and videos. If you’ve lost a parent, a grandparent, a partner or a pet, this one is for you. You’re allowed to feel exactly what you’re feeling.

One hour at a time.
