Is the Mothman a harbinger of doom, or simply a predator of the Appalachian woods? In this episode of Spooky Appalachia, we examine two incredible accounts from hunters and fishermen who came face-to-face with a winged nightmare.
First, we travel to Floyd County, Virginia, on Thanksgiving morning, 2019. A turkey hunter’s successful shot is interrupted by a bone-chilling screech and the sight of a 7-foot-tall creature perched in the skeletal branches of an oak tree. With glowing amber-red eyes and a massive wingspan, this entity seemed to be stalking the same woods as the hunter—leaving him to wonder if the encounter was a warning of the global lockdowns that were soon to follow.
Then, we look back at a chilling 1970s encounter near Addison, West Virginia. A local fisherman named Reece followed a haunting wail from the Ohio River to a place called Brian's Run, only to find a \"breathing ball of brush\" that transformed into a tall, dark humanoid. This story takes an even darker turn when Reece returns to find his boat burned to ashes and a mysterious Man in Black visiting his home, forcing his family to flee the state forever.
