Londoners had to keep lighting to a minimum and everyone was ordered to keep the City of London in total darkness, so as to not create an obvious target for the Luftwaffe.  Of course, total darkness is a criminals dream come true and domestic crime soared during this period.  </p><p>And for one week in February that year, the iconic streets of London's West End were stalked by a predator known as the Blackout Ripper.
