She holds all of it without flinching, as heard on the fantastic album <em>Hard Hearted Woman</em>, her latest release on Sacred Bones.</p><p>Ora has worked as a photojournalist and human rights advocate, and those experiences feed directly into how she thinks about art, resistance, and what the music is actually for. We get into all of that, including her creative process, the long arc of folk music as a living tradition, and why staying soft in hard times is a form of defiance in itself.</p><p>(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from Ora Cogan’s <em>Hard Hearted Woman</em>)</p><p>—</p><h2>Dig Deeper</h2><p><strong>Artist and Album:</strong></p><ul><li>Visit <a href=\"http://www.oracogan.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ora Cogan</a> at her official site and follow on <a href=\"https://bsky.app/profile/oracogan.bsky.social\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bluesky</a>, <a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/oracogan/?hl=en\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram</a>, <a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/oracoganmusic/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook</a>, and <a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/oracogan\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube</a></li><li>Purchase Ora Cogan’s album <em>Hard Hearted Woman</em> from <a href=\"https://www.sacredbonesrecords.com/products/sbr-379-ora-cogan-hard-hearted-woman\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sacred Bones</a>, <a href=\"https://oracogan.bandcamp.com/album/hard-hearted-woman\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bandcamp</a>, or <a href=\"https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/album/hard-hearted-woman-ora-cogan/cy468vqz5snvp\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Qobuz</a>, and listen on your <a href=\"https://oracogan.lnk.to/Hardheartedwoman\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">streaming platform of choice</a></li></ul><p><strong>Label:</strong></p><ul><li><a href=\"https://www.sacredbonesrecords.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sacred Bones Records</a></li></ul><p><strong>Collaborators and Band:</strong></p><ul><li><a href=\"https://lankumdublin.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lankum</a> — Irish doom-folk group; Cormac MacDiarmada contributed to <em>Hard Hearted Woman</em></li><li><a href=\"https://www.backxwash.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Backxwash</a> — Zambian-Canadian rapper and producer; collaborator</li><li><a href=\"http://ylabambamusic.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Y La Bamba</a> — Portland-based indie folk group; collaborator</li><li><a href=\"https://www.emmaruthrundle.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Emma Ruth Rundle</a> — artist Ora has toured with</li><li><a href=\"https://www.lorigoldston.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lori Goldston</a> — legendary cellist (Nirvana's <em>MTV Unplugged</em>); appears on the <em>Bury Me</em> EP</li></ul><p><strong>Musical References:</strong></p><ul><li><a href=\"https://campsite.bio/firedrawnear\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Fire Draw Near</em></a> — Ian Lynch's podcast on Irish traditional music</li><li><a href=\"https://onelegoneeye.bandcamp.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">One Leg One Eye</a> — Ian Lynch's experimental solo project</li></ul><p><strong>Activism and Organizations:</strong></p><ul><li><a href=\"https://translifeline.org/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Trans Lifeline</a> — Grassroots hotline and microgrants organization run by and for trans people; US: (877) 565–8860, Canada: (877) 330–6366</li><li><a href=\"https://transequality.org/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Advocates for Trans Equality</a> — Legal and political advocacy for transgender rights in the US</li><li><a href=\"https://heiltsuknation.ca/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Heiltsuk Nation</a> — The First Nations community on British Columbia's Central Coast whose members accompanied Ora on the canoe journey she describes as a turning point in her life</li><li><a href=\"https://indigenousclimatehub.ca/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Indigenous Climate Hub</a> — Resource hub for Indigenous-led climate action in Canada</li><li><a href=\"https://glaad.org/transgender/resources/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">GLAAD Transgender Resources</a> — Directory of support resources for trans people and allies</li></ul><p>—</p><ul><li>Dig into this episode's complete show notes at <a href=\"https://www.podcast.thetonearm.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">podcast.thetonearm.com</a></li></ul><p>—</p><p>• Did you enjoy this episode?
