It's called <em>Language at an Angle</em>, and it came out on Lobby Art Editions in January. The record grew out of a year of live performances—from Philadelphia to Japan—and it captures Sam doing something specific with pedal steel guitar: striking it, bowing it, treating it as both a sound source and a physical object. The result sits somewhere between drone, jazz, and a kind of American folk music you can't quite place.</p><p>Sam's here to walk us through the record, his move to Philadelphia, and what it means to finally put his own name on the work.</p><p>(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from Sam Wenc's <em>Language at an Angle</em>)</p><p>—</p><p><br></p><h2>Dig Deeper</h2><p>• <strong>Artist and Album:</strong></p><ul><li>Visit Sam Wenc at <a href=\"https://samwenc.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">samwenc.com</a> and follow him on <a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/sam_____wenc/?hl=en\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram</a></li><li>Purchase Sam Wenc's album <em>Language at an Angle</em> from <a href=\"https://lobbyartrecs.bandcamp.com/album/language-at-an-angle\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bandcamp</a> or <a href=\"https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/album/language-at-an-angle-sam-wenc/a1hx59d1v8mgb\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Qobuz</a>, and listen on your <a href=\"https://tr.ee/XuTU0sDF67\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">streaming platform of choice</a></li><li><a href=\"https://samwenc.com/Lobby-Art-Editions\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lobby Art Editions</a> — Sam Wenc's label, releasing <em>Language at an Angle</em> and his previous catalog</li></ul><p>• <strong>Susan Alcorn:</strong></p><ul><li><a href=\"https://www.susanalcorn.net/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Susan Alcorn</a> — official website of the pedal steel pioneer to whom <em>Language at an Angle</em> is dedicated</li><li><a href=\"https://susanalcorn1.bandcamp.com/album/and-i-await-the-resurrection-of-the-pedal-steel-guitar\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>And I Await the Resurrection of the Pedal Steel Guitar</em></a> — Alcorn's landmark 2007 solo album</li><li><a href=\"https://www.thetonearm.com/cry-for-revolution-the-transformative-pedal-steel-of-susan-alcorn/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Susan Alcorn: Revolutionary Voice of the Pedal Steel Guitar</a> — <em>The Tonearm</em>'s tribute, including a full conversation with Alcorn on her album <em>CANTO</em></li><li><a href=\"https://www.wrti.org/arts-desk/2025-02-05/susan-alcorn-a-boundless-pioneer-on-pedal-steel-guitar-is-dead-at-71\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Susan Alcorn obituary — WRTI</a></li></ul><p>• <strong>Collaborators:</strong></p><ul><li><a href=\"https://www.samyulsman.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sam Yulsman</a> — pianist on <em>Language at an Angle</em>;
