His new album, <em>Words Underlined</em>, came out in December on Lit Soc Records. It's the first release from the new label started by Sellers &amp; Newell, a Toronto bookstore that moonlights as a music venue. Patrick recorded there with guitarist Dan Pitt and drummer Lowell Whitty. The trio plays without a bass, and the album alternates between composed pieces and full improvisations.</p><p>A few episodes back, we featured a talk with Noah Franche-Nolan, who also collaborated with Dan Pitt. A link to that, and my November 2024 conversation with Dan, are both in the show notes.</p><p>Patrick's here to talk about making music in the trio format, the Toronto scene, and why a bookstore was the right place to record.</p><p>(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from the album <em>Words Underlined</em> by The Patrick Smith Words Trio)</p><p>–</p><h2>Dig Deeper</h2><p><strong>Artist and Album:</strong></p><ul><li>Visit Patrick Smith at <a href=\"https://www.patricksmithsax.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">patricksmithsax.com</a> and follow him on <a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/patricksmithsax/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram</a> and <a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/patricksmithmusic123\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook</a></li><li>Purchase The Patrick Smith Words Trio's <em>Words Underlined</em> from <a href=\"https://litsocrecords.com/shop/ols/products/patrick-smith-words-trio-words-underlined\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lit Soc Records</a>, <a href=\"https://litsocrecords.bandcamp.com/album/words-underlined\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bandcamp</a>, or <a href=\"https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/album/words-underlined-patrick-smith/kicd6yu36ieq5\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Qobuz</a> and listen on your s<a href=\"https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/patricksmith/words-underlined\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">treaming platform of choice</a></li><li>Listen to Patrick's fusion project <em>Pangea: Rebirth</em> on <a href=\"https://patricksmith-saxophonist.bandcamp.com/album/pangea-rebirth\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bandcamp</a></li></ul><p><strong>Sellers &amp; Newell and Lit Soc Records:</strong></p><ul><li><a href=\"https://sellersandnewel.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Sellers &amp; Newel Secondhand Books</a> — Toronto's beloved College Street bookstore and performance space</li><li><a href=\"https://litsocrecords.bandcamp.com/music\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lit Soc Records on Bandcamp</a></li><li><a href=\"https://www.torontotoday.ca/local/arts-culture/why-this-toronto-bookstore-is-starting-its-own-record-label-11497045\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Why this Toronto bookstore is starting its own record label</a> — <em>Toronto Today</em>, November 2025</li><li><a href=\"https://www.blogto.com/music/2021/09/sellers-newel-live-music-toronto/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto bookstore is moonlighting as an underground live music venue</a> — <em>BlogTO</em>, September 2021</li></ul><p><strong>The Musicians:</strong></p><ul><li><a href=\"https://www.dan-pitt.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Pitt</a> — guitarist and composer, Toronto</li><li><a href=\"https://www.thetonearm.com/between-the-lines-of-dan-pitts-horizontal-depths/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Between the Lines of Dan Pitt's 'Horizontal Depths'</a> - <em>The Tonearm</em>, November 2024</li><li><a href=\"https://lowellwhitty.tumblr.com/bio\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lowell Whitty</a> — drummer and founding member of the Heavyweights Brass Band</li></ul><p><strong>Mentors and Influences:</strong></p><ul><li><a href=\"https://www.allaboutjazz.com/musicians/mark-shim\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Shim</a> — saxophonist; Patrick's primary teacher in New York</li><li><a href=\"https://www.msmnyc.edu/faculty/mark-shim/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Shim at Manhattan School of Music</a></li><li><a href=\"https://www.canadianjazzarchive.net/musicians/dave-young.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Dave Young</a> — Order of Canada recipient; Oscar Peterson's longtime bassist, now based in Toronto</li><li><a href=\"https://davidliebman.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">David Liebman</a> — saxophonist, educator, and major post-Coltrane voice</li><li><em>Developing a Personal Saxophone Sound</em> by David Liebman — <a href=\"https://www.jwpepper.com/developing-a-personal-saxophone-sound-7929508/p\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">available via J.W.
