But his range goes far beyond indie rock. He's spent forty-plus years moving between jazz clubs, punk venues, and studios where the rules get bent or thrown out entirely. Rolling Stone put him on their list of the top 100 guitarists of all time, but that tells you nothing about how he actually plays.</p><p>His current project, <strong>Trio of Bloom</strong>, pairs him with keyboardist <strong>Craig Taborn</strong> and drummer <strong>Marcus Gilmore</strong> on <strong>Pyroclastic Records</strong>. The three had never played together before producer <strong>David Breskin</strong> brought them into the studio in November 2024. What came out sounds like a band that's been working together for years, full of ambient drift and barbed funk that explores the outer edges of dub.</p><p>(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from Trio of Bloom's self-titled album)</p><p>–</p><p><strong>Dig Deeper</strong></p><p><br></p><h3><strong>Artist and Album</strong></h3><ul><li>Visit Nels Cline at<a href=\"https://www.nelscline.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> nelscline.com</a> and follow him on<a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/nelscline/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> Instagram</a> and <a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/nelscline/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook</a></li><li>Visit Craig Taborn at<a href=\"https://craigtaborn.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> craigtaborn.com</a> and follow him on<a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/craigtaborn/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> Instagram</a></li><li>Visit Marcus Gilmore at<a href=\"https://drummerslams.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> drummerslams.com</a> and follow him on<a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/drummerslams/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> Instagram</a></li><li>Purchase Trio of Bloom from <a href=\"https://trioofbloom.bandcamp.com/album/trio-of-bloom\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bandcamp</a> or <a href=\"https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/album/trio-of-bloom-trio-of-bloom/v6gl5g1yj7z3b\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Qobuz</a> and listen on your<a href=\"https://album.link/t/440202268\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> streaming platform of choice</a></li><li><a href=\"https://pyroclasticrecords.com/artist/trio-of-bloom/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Trio of Bloom on Pyroclastic Records</a></li></ul><h3><strong>Collaborators and Producer</strong></h3><ul><li><a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Breskin\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">David Breskin</a> - producer, poet, and creative catalyst</li><li><a href=\"https://krisdavis.net/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Kris Davis</a> - founder of Pyroclastic Records</li><li><a href=\"https://pyroclasticrecords.com/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Pyroclastic Records</a> - independent label supporting creative music</li></ul><h3><strong>Key Groups and Projects Mentioned</strong></h3><ul><li><a href=\"https://wilcoworld.net/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Wilco</a> - Nels Cline has been guitarist since 2004</li><li><a href=\"https://www.nelscline.com/the-nels-cline-singers\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Nels Cline Singers</a> - long-running experimental project</li><li><a href=\"https://www.nelscline.com/nc4\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Nels Cline 4</a> - featuring Julian Lage, Scott Colley, and Tom Rainey</li><li><a href=\"https://www.nelscline.com/nels-cline-consentrik-quartet\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Consentrik Quartet</a> - with Ingrid Laubrock, Chris Lightcap, and Tom Rainey on Blue Note Records</li></ul><h3><strong>Cover Songs Referenced</strong></h3><ul><li><a href=\"https://album.link/i/1442891425\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Terje Rypdal - <em>What Comes After</em></a> (ECM, 1974) - source of \"Bend It\"</li><li><a href=\"https://album.link/i/516364206\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Wayne Shorter &amp;
