\"Mabel\" follows Callie, a bright and fiercely independent young girl whose world revolves around trees and plants. After her family moves and she is forced to start at a new middle school, Callie struggles to connect with the people around her. That begins to change when she discovers that substitute teacher Ms. G, played by Judy Greer, is teaching a high school botany unit.
Fascinated by Ms. G's lessons, Callie talks her way into the class and begins an experiment growing chrysanthemums in darkness. She soon recruits her outgoing young neighbor Agnes to help, and her love of botany becomes an unexpected path toward friendship, change, and growing up.
