This week's Present Pleasures:
Josie and the Pussycats (2001, 33:05) is a fun teenage comedy based on the Archie comic characters of the same name. Josie, Val, and Melody (Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, and Tara Reid) are three lifelong friends in a struggling rock band until they are discovered by music manager Wyatt (Alan Cumming) who takes them under his wing and they go skyrocketing in the charts. Unbeknownst to them, Wyatt and Fiona (Parker Posey) are hatching a plan incorporating subliminal messaging under all their hit music tracks to brainwash the average American teenager's mind. Light work, right?
Listen to Ruby and her bestie Courtnie talk in TWO parts (Part 2 is also released today) about the power of millennium era tween/teen culture that they lived through, which was perfectly encapsulated in this movie. They also debate whether Alan M and Josie were a good match, what their favorite boy bands were during the 90s/00s, and try to determine what Fiona's star sign is.
