Nearly 50 thousand Americans last year were the victims of&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.kff.org/other/state-indicator/provisional-2017-opioid-overdose-deaths-as-a-percent-of-all-drug-overdose-deaths/?currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\">opioid overdose&nbsp;</a>deaths--<a href=\"http://fortune.com/2018/11/13/us-drug-overdose-death-rate-opioids-fentanyl/\" target=\"_blank\">twice the rate</a>&nbsp;of other wealthy nations.</p><p><br></p><p>But now, because of impressive initiatives to tackle the crisis, there are small glimmers of hope. The death-rate might be <a href=\"https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/drug-overdose-data.htm\" target=\"_blank\">starting to fall.</a>&nbsp;This month, a New York Times report highlighted&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/25/health/opioid-overdose-deaths-dayton.html\" target=\"_blank\">a plunge in fatal overdoses</a>&nbsp;in Dayton, Ohio, which had one of the highest rates in 2017.</p><p><br></p><p>Among the possible solutions we hear about is GROW, a local effort that dispatches teams of social workers, medics, police officers and recovery experts to the homes of people who've overdosed.&nbsp;&nbsp;We also discuss the&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/americas-heroin-epidemic/fda-approves-powerful-new-opioid-terrible-decision-n930571\" target=\"_blank\">FDA's approval</a>&nbsp;of the controversial synthetic opioid, Dsuvia, to treat cases of&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/dr-marc-siegel-why-is-the-fda-approving-a-powerful-new-synthetic-opioid-in-the-midst-of-a-crisis-heres-why\" target=\"_blank\">extreme pain</a>, and the recent passage of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/9/28/17913938/trump-opioid-epidemic-congress-support-act-bill-law\" target=\"_blank\">bipartisan bill&nbsp;</a>to fight the epidemic.</p><p><br></p><p>For this episode, we include last year's \"How Do We Fix It?\" interview with journalist Sam Quinones, author of the highly praised book, \"Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic.\"</p>","author_name":"DaviesContent"}
