Apostrophe - apóstrofe         

          

We use an apostrophe with the possessive ’S - Usamos apóstrofe com o possessivo ‘S.


eg.

This is Andy’s book - Este é o livro do Andy.


When the noun is plural, the apostrophe comes after the S - Quando o substantivo está no plural, a apóstrofe vem depois do S.


eg.

The boys’ shirts were very dirty - As camisas dos meninos estavam muito sujas.


With irregular plurals or plural words without S, the apostrophe comes before the S - Com plurais irregulares ou palavras no plural sem S, a apóstrofe vem antes do S.


eg.

The children’s books were on the floor - Os livros das crianças estavam no chão.         

      

We use an apostrophe with contractions - Usamos apóstrofe com contrações.


eg.

I can’t speak French - Eu não sei falar francês.

He’s got a new mobile phone - Ele tem um celular novo.

They didn’t go on holiday last year - Eles não saíram de férias no ano passado.


We use an apostrophe when we talk about time in the future - Usamos apóstrofe quando falamos de tempo no futuro.


eg.

In 1 year’s time = 1 year in the future - Daqui a 1 ano = 1 ano no futuro

In 2 years’ time = 2 years in the future - Daqui a 2 anos = 2 anos no futuro

In 10 minutes’ time = 10 minutes in the future - Em 10 minutos = 10 minutos no futuro
