🚨 ARSENAL ARE OUT OF THE CARABAO CUP! FLEETWOOD TOWN PULL OFF A HISTORIC UPSET!
FLEETWOOD TOWN 1-1 ARSENAL — FLEETWOOD WIN 5-3 ON PENALTIES!
Mikel Arteta's Arsenal have suffered a stunning Carabao Cup exit against League Two Fleetwood Town after a dramatic night at Highbury Stadium.
Despite dominating possession, creating numerous chances and seeing VIKTOR GYÖKERES score an equaliser, Arsenal were unable to find a winner before losing the penalty shootout.
But was this simply an embarrassing result, or are there positives to take from the bigger picture?
In today's Arsenal Match Reaction, Tom Canton breaks down Kai Havertz's difficult evening, Max Dowman's controversial red card, Mikel Arteta's decisions and the bright side of an otherwise hugely disappointing cup exit.
⚽ FLEETWOOD TOWN 1-1 ARSENAL — WHAT WENT WRONG?
Fleetwood took a shock lead through Aaron Loupalo-Bi in the first half, exposing Arsenal's defensive vulnerability despite the Gunners controlling much of the match.
Arteta responded with changes at half-time, introducing Martin Ødegaard and Ben White, and Arsenal quickly found an equaliser through Viktor Gyökeres.
But missed opportunities, outstanding Fleetwood goalkeeping and a failure to convert dominance into goals ultimately proved costly.
😬 KAI HAVERTZ — A NIGHT TO FORGET?
Kai Havertz found himself in several promising positions but failed to take his opportunities.
Was it simply a case of poor finishing, or does his performance raise wider questions about Arsenal's attacking depth and efficiency?
We discuss Havertz's contribution, his confidence and how Arteta can get the best from the German international.
🟥 MAX DOWMAN SENT OFF!
Sixteen-year-old Max Dowman was shown a straight red card late in the game following an incident with Fleetwood's Harrison Neal.
Was the decision justified? How should Arteta have responded? And what lessons can the talented teenager take from a difficult experience?
We also examine Dowman's positive contributions before the dismissal and why one incident should not define his development.
🎙️ ARTETA'S REACTION — SHOULD HE TAKE THE BLAME?
Arteta admitted Arsenal were disappointed but defended his players' effort and application.
With Arsenal creating enough opportunities to win the game, where does responsibility lie?
Was the team selection right? Did the substitutions work? And should Arsenal have done more to put the tie beyond Fleetwood?
🌤️ THE BRIGHT SIDE OF ARSENAL'S CUP EXIT
There's no disguising the disappointment of losing to a League Two opponent.
However, Arsenal remain in the Premier League title race and the Champions League, with a huge trip to Liverpool approaching.
Could fewer domestic cup fixtures provide an opportunity to manage the squad, protect injured players and focus on the biggest prizes?
That doesn't excuse the performance or diminish the Carabao Cup, but it is a conversation worth having.
