Above the Warwickshire village of Long Compton stands one of England's strangest prehistoric landscapes. According to legend, the Rollright Stones are a king and his army turned to stone by a witch, while generations of local people told stories of bleeding elder trees, fairies dancing around the stones, impossible stone counts, shape-shifting witches and ancient monuments that moved after dark. Even into the twentieth century, Long Compton retained its extraordinary reputation as a village where the influence of witches was said to come and go like the full moon.
As summer wanes and the nights grow long, we turn to tales of witches, curses, and the old ways that never truly died. For centuries, harvest time has carried its own magic: charms for fields, blessings for homes, and darker stories of those who bent nature to their will.
