In this episode of Akk Oy Vey the Jewpod, you meet Carol Isaacs, a keyboard player & accordionist in the pop and world music fields, recording and touring worldwide with many international artists including Sinéad O’Connor (Ireland), The Indigo Girls (US), Ahmed Mukhtar (Iraq). Also known as cartoonist The Surreal McCoy (published in New Yorker, Spectator, Private Eye) she drew The Wolf of Baghdad graphic memoir based on her own family’s recollections.
Carol shares with us her Babylonian Jewish heritage, discussing the Farhud, which were the pogroms that occurred in Iraq during and after World War II. She also touches upon the nostalgia for a place she has never been and explores the concept of Ashkenormativity, highlighting how European Jewish culture has often dominated the narratives of other Jewish identities and values.
