In June 2008, one of the most audacious prison breaks of the war in Afghanistan unfolded in Kandahar. The operation was a stunning demonstration of Taliban planning, intelligence, and reach in a region where Canadian forces were fighting to stabilize the country. But how did the attackers pull it off? Who was behind the operation? And what did the escape reveal about the growing insurgency—and the challenges facing Afghan, Canadian, and coalition forces?
