This week on Heavy Metal Tones, I’m getting into a subject that can divide music fans faster than a dodgy guitar solo — re-recording, remixing and remastering classic albums and tracks in the pursuit of better sound.

Can you really take a raw, dirty, low-fi classic and make it better without taking away what made it special in the first place?

I take a deep dive into Cronos’ re-recordings of classic Venom tracks, looking at what happens when one of the architects of extreme metal goes back and revisits the music that helped define the genre.

Then I turn the spotlight onto the audiophile pressing of the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols. Does improving the sound reveal more detail and power — or does some of the glorious roughness and attitude get lost along the way?

This is a very personal look at original recordings versus reworked versions, the audiophile obsession, nostalgia, production choices and that eternal question:
