Amherst, Nova Scotia was home to a haunting that has still not been completely explained to this day. Esther Cox began experiencing unexplained phenomena in late August 1878 after being assaulted by a local man named Bob MacNeil. Bob fled the village after the attack however the manifestations of a poltergeist haunted Esther Cox for more than a year. For much of this time, Esther lived with family and friends who also witnessed the hauntings. Many credible people including local business owners, a physician, and clergy claim to have also witnessed the events. The experiences of Esther Cox became known as the “The Great Amherst Mystery.\"
