During the pandemic, however, her family's needs shifted, and the project grew into a multi-generational home for four generations. Vani explains how hand-deconstructing the original house allowed them to salvage brick for the new facade and how five custom window "periscopes" pull natural light and tree canopy views into the interior.

We discuss the practical details of designing homes for aging family members, including low-level kitchen storage, zero-entry bathrooms, and logical floorplan circulation. Vani also shares how specifying James Hardie siding gave the exterior a clean metal appearance while adding 1,000 square feet during permitting without exceeding the construction budget.

💡 What we cover in this episode:

• Preserving the 160-year-old Live Oak and reusing hand-deconstructed bricks in the new facade.

• Designing five pop-out periscope windows inspired by childhood toys to bring light and sky views indoors.

• Creating clear pathways, accessible low kitchen cabinets, and zero-threshold bathrooms for older family members.

• Using smart siding details to add 1,000 square feet during permitting within the original budget.

• Combining Indian terracotta, terrazzo, and Portuguese blue tiles to reflect family heritage.

⏯️ CHAPTERS / TIMESTAMPS:

00:00 - AIA Austin Homes Tour Preview

00:33 - Introducing Vani Singal & Twin Oaks

01:58 - Designing Around a 160-Year-Old Live Oak

04:38 - Reclaiming History: Hand-Deconstructed Brickwork

07:06 - Childhood Inspiration: 5 Architectural Periscopes

09:05 - Floorplan Crossroads & Multi-Generational Flow

10:37 - Living Room & Thermal Comfort by the Fireplace

14:40 - Multi-Generational Kitchen Design & Aging in Place

18:37 - Biophilic Bathroom Design & Accessible Luxury

21:08 - Primary Bedroom Periscope Retreat

23:17 - Portuguese Roots: Blue Tiled Bath Sanctuary

26:02 - Evolving Kids' Playroom Canopy View

27:40 - Outdoor Connection & Courtyard Pool

28:51 - Covid Pivot: Adding 1,000 Sq Ft Mid-Permitting

30:42 - Smart Detailing: Metal-Look Siding on a Fixed Budget

33:02 - The Flexible Self-Contained Pool House

35:17 - Final Reflections & AIA Austin Tour Details

Subscribe to TALKdesign for weekly conversations with architects, designers, and creative thinkers exploring how great design works.

#TALKdesign #AdrianRamsay #AIAAustinHomesTour #Workshop5 #VaniSingal #MultiGenerationalLiving #CustomHomeDesign #BiophilicDesign #ResidentialArchitecture #DesignThinking #AIAAustin
","author_name":"Adrian Ramsay"}
