Young played <a title= \"College football\" href= \"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_football\">college football</a> for <a title=\"Brigham Young University\" href= \"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigham_Young_University\">Brigham Young University</a>, setting school and NCAA records en route to being runner-up for the 1983 <a title=\"Heisman Trophy\" href= \"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heisman_Trophy\">Heisman Trophy</a>.</p> <p>Young was named the AP's <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title= \"NFL Most Valuable Player\" href= \"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_Most_Valuable_Player\">NFL Most Valuable Player</a> in <a title=\"1992 NFL season\" href= \"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_NFL_season\">1992</a> and <a title=\"1994 NFL season\" href= \"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_NFL_season\">1994</a>, and was the MVP of <a title=\"Super Bowl XXIX\" href= \"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XXIX\">Super Bowl XXIX</a>. During his 1994 MVP campaign, he set a new NFL record for passer rating at 112.8. He is a member of the <a title= \"College Football Hall of Fame\" href= \"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_Football_Hall_of_Fame\">College Football Hall of Fame</a> and the <a title= \"Pro Football Hall of Fame\" href= \"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pro_Football_Hall_of_Fame\">Pro Football Hall of Fame</a>.</p> <p>Young was an efficient passer—leading the league in passer rating a record six times, and completion percentage and yards per attempt five times. At the time of his retirement, he had the highest <a title=\"Passer rating\" href= \"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passer_rating\">passer rating</a> among NFL quarterbacks with at least 1,500 passing attempts (96.8). As of the end of the <a title=\"2016 NFL season\" href= \"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_NFL_season\">2016 season</a>, he is ranked fifth all-time in passer rating, and is ranked second highest amongst retired players, behind only <a title=\"Tony Romo\" href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Romo\">Tony Romo</a>.
