They’re far removed from the formal portraiture one might expect of Denmark’s foremost composer. As well as a good sense of humour, these unselfconscious poses reveal an open, inquisitive fascination with the world around him. \n\nIn this episode, Donald Macleod explores how the world around him fed into Nielsen’s music. Excerpts from five of his symphonies reveal some of his most profound thinking on life, while his major choral works Hymnus Amoris and Springtime on Funen - which directly relate to his rural childhood - show a more personal side of his character. Ever the keen observer, there’s comedy and drama and even a musical portrait of chickens to be found in his operas. \n\n\nMusic featured:\nMaskarade: Overture \nViolin Concerto, Op 33 (Rondo: Allegretto scherzando) \nFrihed er det bedste guld\nHelios Overture \nAfflictus Sum (3 Motets) \nThe Cockerel’s Dance (Maskarade) \nSe dig ud en sommerdag \nChaconne, Op 32 \nSymphony No 3 (1: Allegro espansivo) \nString Quintet in G major (3: Allegretto scherzando) \nSpringtime on Funen, Op 42 \nFive Piano Pieces Op 3 (Humoresque: Allegretto giocoso) \nLittle Suite for Strings (Intermezzo)\n6 Songs, Op 10 \nSymphony No 1 (Allegro orgoglioso) \nHymnus Amoris \nBenedictus Dominus (3 Motets) \nJens Vejmand (excerpts) \nSuite, Op 45 for piano (Allegretto un pochettino)\nSaga-Dream \nSaul and David (Act 4) \nString Quartet in F major, Op 44 (1: Allegro non tanto e comodo)\nSymphony No 5 (Allegro – Presto – Andante poco tranquillo – Allegro (tempo 1)) \nGraeshoppen \nWind Quintet (1: Allegro ben moderato) \nPan and Syrinx, Op 49 \nSonata for violin and piano No 2, Op 35 (2: molto adagio) \nSymphony No 4 (1: Allegro)\n\nPresented by Donald Macleod\nProduced by Johannah Smith for BBC Wales\n\nFor full tracklistings, including artist and recording details, and to listen to the pieces featured in full (for 30 days after broadcast) head to the series page for Carl Nielsen https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0006m0z \n\nAnd you can delve into the A-Z of all the composers we’ve featured on Composer of the Week here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3cjHdZlXwL7W41XGB77X3S0/composers-a-to-z","author_name":"BBC Radio 3"}
