During the course of his 2800 miles/4500km from the Himalaya Mountains of northern Ledakh to the southern sea tip of Kanyakamuri, Olie also re-traced the 240-mile journey of Mahatma Gandhi’s 1930 Salt March protest, and he ended his trip where Gandhi’s ashes were scattered in the ocean. Carrying his film equipment on his back, enduring physical and emotional hardships across the course of a seven and a half month expedition, Hunter Smart interviewed dozens of people along the way, from former Freedom Fighters who remember the battle for Independence, to Gandhi’s great grandson who reminds us that non-violence means to not violate.</p><p><br></p><p>I talked with Olie about his amazing walk through incredible India, how he made a film without prior experience, and about how someone with a relatively normal background takes on expeditions like this – and his previous grand adventure, the Amazon River Run where he traced the Amazon 4500 miles from the Peruvian mountains to the Brazilian Atlantic Ocean.</p><p><br></p><p>Includes clips from the movie, <a href=\"http://www.oliehuntersmart.com/the-road-to-independence-film\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Road To Independence</a>.</p><p><br></p><p>I also draw parallels between Olie’s journey south through India and Scott Jurek’s FKT running North on the Appalachian Trail.</p><p><br></p><p>You can watch The Road To Independence on Vimeo, <a href=\"https://vimeo.com/r/2UWE/ejlhQXFwUV\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">https://vimeo.com/r/2UWE/ejlhQXFwUV</a>&nbsp;</p><p>Enter promo code OSB50 at checkout for a 50% discount.</p><p><br></p><p>Read more about Olie Hunter Smart’s expeditions at his web site, <a href=\"https://open.acast.com/shows/5e961ed69ca827b768efc30d/episodes/www.oliehuntersmart.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">oliehuntersmart.com</a></p><p>You can follow Olie at Instagram, Facebook and Twitter also at oliehuntersmart.com</p><p><br></p><p>Podcasts mentioned in this episode:</p><p><a href=\"https://www.thepursuitzone.com/tpz204/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Pursuit Zone</a> - Adventure Travel Ep 204</p><p><a href=\"https://www.calltoadventure.uk/podcast/cta-episode7-olie-hunter-smart\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Call To Adventure</a> Episode 7</p><p><a href=\"https://www.unravellingtravelling.com/episode-8-nomad-life\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Unraveling Traveling</a> Episode 8</p><p><a href=\"https://www.plantstrongpodcast.com/blog/episode-12-scott-jurek\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Plant Strong</a> Episode 12</p><p><a href=\"https://athleticbrewing.com/blogs/podcast/alex-dyson-athletic-ambassador-amp-appalachian-trail-thru-hiker\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Without Compromise</a> Oct 23</p><p><br></p><p>Also,</p><p><a href=\"https://www.gunksrunner.com/paincave/2020/10/18/episode-70-rockin-out-with-tony-fletcher\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Pain Cave</a> Ep 70 with Tony Fletcher</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>For questions or comments, or to <a href=\"http://eepurl.com/FQqXL\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">subscribe </a>to the newsletter, <a href=\"mailto:OneStepBeyond@ijamming.net\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">e-mail</a> Onestepbeyond@ijamming.net</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Join One Step Beyond on social media at:</p><p><a href=\"https://www.instagram.com/onestepbeyondpodcast/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Instagram </a>is OneStepBeyondPodcast</p><p><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/OneStepBeyondPod/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook</a> is One Step Beyond with Tony Fletcher</p><p><a href=\"https://twitter.com/OneStepBeyondP1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter</a> is OneStepBeyondP1</p><p><br></p><p>And your host can be found here:</p><p><a href=\"https://tonyfletcher.net\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tonyfletcher.net </a></p><p><br></p><p>All links can be found at</p><p>https://shows.acast.com/onestepbeyond/episodes/ep-14-walking-india-top-to-bottom</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p>","author_name":"Tony Fletcher"}
