In this episode, Tammy speaks to James McCarthy about the expert element of the Training 4 Influence methodology. They discuss the value of expertise when delivering training, define what is an expert, and explain why you might be an expert even though you're scared of calling yourself one.
James McCarthy is one of the founding facilitators at Taye Training, so his training influenced the development of the Training 4 Influence methodology. Throughout his training James utilises his connected experience working with people convicted of sexual offences, as a youth worker for a local authority and in charities, to inform the way that he delivers sessions.
James specialises in service user focused training; identifying and developing skills to communicate, support and manage high-risk service users with multiple needs, implementing a person-centred approach, in order to develop and maintain productive relationships with each service user. He has both a passion for and is a natural when it comes to working with people with a range of complex needs; facilitating their empowerment and supporting them to achieve their potential and recognising their own capabilities.
Training 4 Influence came about because of our frustrations within the sector. Tired of the restrictions, lack of money and siloed working that make it difficult to see through big changes, we started looking at what was already taking place and how we could better it. That’s when we realised that there was an opportunity to make small yet significant changes through the mandatory and specialist training sessions that people were already attending. After many years of using the methodology within our own training company we realised that this was a solution that needed to be shared. Which is why we created the Training 4 Influence programme and wrote our recently published book Transform Your Training: Develop and deliver training that changes lives in the criminal justice, social care and charity sectors.
