This painting depicts a common festival of the period, as celebrated in the Southern Netherlands. It presents the contrast between two sides of contemporary life, as can be seen by the appearance of the inn on the left side - for enjoyment, and the church on the right side - for religious observance.\n<br><br>\nThe busy scene depicts well-behaved children near the church and a beer drinking scene near the inn. At the centre is a well, showing the coming together of different parts of the community, and other scenes show a fish stall and two competing floats.\n<br><br>\nJonathan Healey is Associate Professor in Social History\nat Kellogg College at University of Oxford.\n<p>\nView this episode's image <a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fight_Between_Carnival_and_Lent#/media/File:Pieter_Bruegel_d._%C3%84._066.jpg\">here</a>.\n<p>\nSubscribe, rate and review on <a href=\"http://historyh.it/artdetective\">iTunes</a> and follow Janina on <a href=\"http://twitter.com/DrJaninaRamirez\">Twitter</a>.\n<p> Follow History Hit on <a href=\"http://fb.com/HistoryHit\">Facebook</a>, <a href=\"http://instagram.com/historyhit\">Instagram</a> and <a href=\"http://twitter.com/HistoryHit\">Twitter</a>.\n<p>\nPlease share this episode on <a href=\"https://twitter.com/home?status=Listen%20to%20the%20latest%20episode%20of%20%23ArtDetective%20with%20%40DrJaninaRamirez%20historyh.it/artdetective\">Twitter</a> and <a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=http%3A//historyh.it/artdetective\">Facebook</a>.\n<p>\nProducer: <a href=\"http://www.twitter.com/danmorelle\">Dan Morelle</a>\n  For information regarding your data privacy, visit <a href=\"https://www.acast.com/privacy\">acast.com/privacy</a>","author_name":"Laluma"}
