Watch our first conversation on AI ethics here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHDoPoezQHI&t=10s

In this second installment of our series on AI ethics, Professor Warut Khern-am-nuai takes a pragmatic view. He’s a professor of information systems at McGill University, and the director of the AI and Advanced Digital Technologies Initiative. He believes AI can help make certain processes, like hiring or home financing, not only more efficient – but also more equitable.

As companies race to build more powerful AI tools, they are raising fundamental questions about “right” and “wrong,” and how to codify these values into AI behaviour. But Khern-am-nuai moves us away from big questions of moral philosophy towards hard, measurable outcomes.

Is AI helping us hire historically marginalized people? Can it help us equitably approve financing for first-time homebuyers? Can it help address disparities between workers within an organization? For Khern-am-nuai, AI can help in these areas, making it a useful tool for deploying ethics across organizations and society.

This week, he explains his perspective to Professor Lindsay Holmgren, director of the McGill Laidley Centre for Business Ethics and Equity – the host of this podcast episode.

Have questions about one of our podcast episodes?
