J.K. Rowling has publicly admitted she has a "God-shaped vacuum" inside her, and has struggled with religious faith since her teenage years. John-Henry Westen responds with an open letter, praising Rowling for standing by her convictions on sex differences and opposing assisted suicide. Her willingness to defend unpopular truths, he argues, reflects a deeper search for meaning. Rejecting God leaves a spiritual void that society attempts to fill with false beliefs and harmful ideologies.
Drawing on Blaise Pascal's idea of an infinite abyss and St. Augustine's reflection that "our hearts are restless until they rest in God," Westen presents Christianity as the answer to both personal doubt and cultural confusion. He makes a case for the truth of Christianity, pointing to biblical prophecy, the historical claims surrounding Jesus Christ, the endurance of the Catholic Church, and the moral transformation Christianity brought to society. Faith is not opposed to reason. Evidence and rational reflection lead to a decision that requires personal assent and divine grace.
John-Henry connects themes in the Harry Potter books, particularly Lily Potter's self-sacrifice and the biblical quotations in Deathly Hallows, to Christian ideas of love, sacrifice, and the triumph over death. Rowling wrote about a love that conquers death. That love has a name. The episode concludes with a direct appeal for Rowling to embrace Catholicism, especially the Eucharist, and a request for Catholics to pray for her conversion. The vacuum in her heart is not a mystery. It is a hunger for God. And the answer has been waiting for her all along.
