Jason Jones traveled to southern Lebanon with his 18-year-old son on a humanitarian mission to assist vulnerable Christian communities caught between Israel and Hezbollah. They slept in villages while nearby bombing repeatedly shook their building. They traveled through dangerous territory and passed the aftermath of deadly attacks. Through the Vulnerable People Project, Jones's team visited isolated Christian villages, organized festivals for hundreds of children, celebrated the Feast of the Assumption with local Christians, and developed a plan to help these communities survive the coming winter.
Jones describes what he says is the destruction of Christian villages, churches, crucifixes, and religious images by Israeli forces, comparing some of the desecration he witnessed to what he previously saw after ISIS attacks in Iraq. Ancient Christian communities in Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank are being abandoned while trapped between competing regional powers.
Jones calls on American Catholics to use their political influence and resources to defend them. He urges Christians to overcome internal divisions and develop a lasting \"habit of solidarity\" with persecuted Christians around the world. The children are suffering. The churches are being destroyed. The faithful are being abandoned. The question is whether American Catholics will respond, or remain silent while the Holy Land's Christians disappear. The time for solidarity is now.
