Dr. Steven Young has been one of the most precious humans in my life. He arrives right on time, in the exact moment I need it, with a message of love that changes something. This episode is a conversation with a man who has spent thirty-seven years in devotion to gnosis, knowing thyself, and who found out last year that he still had a story running underneath everything.
It starts with a card game. Steven is five. His older brother is cheating and Steven calls it out, because from where he's sitting he's just naming what's true. His brother's response is to convince all the cousins not to play with him. And in that moment, a five-year-old adopts a story: they don't understand me.
That one story became the seed. The soil came after. His parents divorced when he was eight, the family came to America with nothing, they picked furniture out of the trash and lived in a room with no kitchen and no bathroom for a year. His mother waitressed eighty hours a week and couldn't speak English. He was, in his own words, physically alone. And the branches of that one story kept growing until they reached every area of his life. By fourteen he was ready to leave the world.
Thirty-seven years of devotion later, in a relationship of three decades, Steven finally saw the flip side of it. If the story is they don't understand me, then what I need is to be chosen. He had been hyper-attached to being chosen without ever once seeing it, and any act from his partner that wasn't that would activate him.
