The town took hold after a scuffle between some Native Americans and surveyors over food. Later a deal was reached and the NA left leaving settlers to take over the land. In the center of town just on the Northside of Kalamazoo is the Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center. This building is what remains of the famous or infamous Battle Creek Sanitarium aka “The San”. It was once a boomtown when the foresting industry showed up in Washington but like so many others the town dwindled in size as the forest did.
