It is the first installment in&nbsp;<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fast_and_the_Furious\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Fast and the Furious</em></a>&nbsp;franchise. It was released in the United States on June 22, 2001.&nbsp;<em>The Fast and the Furious</em>&nbsp;follows&nbsp;<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_O%27Conner\" target=\"_blank\">Brian O'Conner</a>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Walker\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Walker</a>), an undercover cop tasked with discovering the identities of a group of unknown automobile hijackers led by&nbsp;<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominic_Toretto\" target=\"_blank\">Dominic Toretto</a>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vin_Diesel\" target=\"_blank\">Vin Diesel</a>).</p><p>Development for&nbsp;<em>The Fast and the Furious</em>&nbsp;arose after Cohen read a&nbsp;<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibe_(magazine)\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Vibe</em></a>&nbsp;magazine article in 1998 titled \"Racer X\", which detailed the illegal street racing circuit operating within&nbsp;<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City\" target=\"_blank\">New York City</a>.&nbsp;After contacting producer&nbsp;<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neal_H._Moritz\" target=\"_blank\">Neal H. Moritz</a>, Moritz was able to present the script to Universal Studios, who greenlit&nbsp;<em>The Fast and the Furious</em>&nbsp;in 2000.&nbsp;Walker was the first actor to sign onto the project, while Diesel initially had to be persuaded to participate in the film, accepting after proposing several script changes.</p><p>Principal photography began in&nbsp;<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles</a>&nbsp;in July 2000, with the majority of filming being done on location in Los Angeles and southern&nbsp;<a href=\"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California\" target=\"_blank\">California</a>, which ended in October 2000.</p><p>Upon release,&nbsp;<em>The Fast and the Furious</em>&nbsp;was a commercial success, grossing over $200 million worldwide. It received generally positive reviews, with praise directed at both Walker and Diesel's performance, and the film's action sequences.
