Then it starts again, louder, right behind her, and the temperature drops so fast she can see her breath. Her supervisor goes quiet: a young woman died at one of the looms in the 1880s.
Then Marcus and his brother renovate an 1850s clapboard house in Portland, Maine, with a music box that plays at dusk and a woman humming inches behind him on a locked-up afternoon. But it's his brother's night that lingers, a weight sitting down on the end of the air mattress, dipping it like a person, then rising when he turned on the light. A seamstress had lived and died there in the 1870s.
