Sexy & Surreal: Episode 43 - Surveillance (2008)

Season 4, Ep. 77

Terry and Joe are back to discuss Jennifer Lynch's sophomore feature, 2008's Surveillance. This twisty crime thriller features a great cast (many of whom are playing against type) and may be the closest thing to Lynch's uncompromised vision as a creator.

Plus: Terry's first time viewing reaction, Joe's fave character, grisly violence, and the unusual genesis of the project.

    Terry and Joe descend upon Li Tolqa to discuss Brandon Cronenberg's third film, Infinity Pool (2023), which features a divisive Mia Goth performance (we *love* it BTW). It also has numerous intriguing storylines that meander a bit by the end, but perhaps that's the whole point?Plus: the downbeat ending; satire & politics; James as an emasculated dog; and anticipation for Cronenberg's new space-set filmWanna connect with your co-hosts on Instagram & BlueSky?> Terry: @gaylydreadful> Joe: @bstolemyremote / @joelipsett (BlueSky)Theme Music: Roniit - "Purify"If you like the podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe!Discover more fabulously creepy Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad and follow the network on Instagram and BlueSky @aoas_xx

  • 83. Sexy & Surreal: Episode 45 - Hisss (2010) and Despite The Gods (2012)

    43:59||Season 4, Ep. 83
    For the second last Jennifer Lynch text, Terry and Joe are trying something different. Considering Hisss (2010) had a famously troubled production, we're also including director Penny Vozniak's documentary Despite The Gods (2012), which chronicles the making of the film. The doc is an essential part of the viewing experience in order to understand what happened in India and why Lynch doesn't claim Hisss as her own.Plus: praising star Mallika Sherawat and the practical snake effects, debating the broad comedy, and why George States doesn't work as a villain for us.Wanna connect with your co-hosts on Instagram & BlueSky?> Terry: @gaylydreadful> Joe: @bstolemyremote / @joelipsett (BlueSky)Theme Music: Roniit - "Purify"If you like the podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe!Discover more fabulously creepy Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad and follow the network on Instagram and BlueSky @aoas_xx

    Get out of the lake and toss the flowers because Jenn, Gena, and Joe have re-entered the Oscar race with a look at Nia DaCosta's update of Ibsen's famous play, Hedda (2025).Starring a dazzling Tessa Thompson and a commanding Nina Hoss, this 1950-set all-in-one-night film race & queer swaps characters to breathe new life into the material. Helped by a propulsive score, *gorgeous* costumes and prowling camerawork, this one really worked for us!Wanna connect with the show on Bluesky and Instagram?> Gena: @genadoesthings> Jenn: @jennferatu> Joe: @bstolemyremote / @joelipsett (BlueSky)If you like the podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe!Discover more dangerously good shows on the Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad and follow the network on Instagram and BlueSky @aoas_xx
  • 81. Bodies of Horror: Episode 105 - The Skeleton Key (2005)

    56:32||Season 4, Ep. 81
    Bodies of Horror is ending National Family Caregivers Month with a focus on “paid” or “professional” caregivers. This may include hospice nurses and others that help provide skilled or medical care when family caregivers need the support. 2005’s The Skeleton Key takes on weighty themes of generational trauma, racism and faith in the wrapping of a gothic ghost/haunted house story. Does it handle these themes well? Welp…Want to recommend a film to be covered or share your thoughts on the film?
