  • 43. Sexy & Surreal: Episode 22 - Crash (1996)

    01:01:31
It's finally time: we've reached Joe's favourite Cronenberg film, 1996's Crash. Expect lots of gushing from Joe, but what does first time viewer Terry think of the controversial film adaptation of J.G. Ballard's novel?Plus: is this sexy, clinical or both? Why is Elias Koteas so hot? Is the gay sex adequate? And where is Holly Hunter?Wanna connect with your co-hosts?> Terry: @gaylydreadful> Joe: @bstolemyremoteIf you like the podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe!Theme Music: Roniit - "Purify"
  • 42. Bodies of Horror: Episode 72 - Crimes of the Future (2022) feat. Gena Radcliffe

    01:53:23
After a brief venture into crime thrillers, David Cronenberg made a return to the body horror subgenre with 2022’s Crimes of the Future. He brought along his current go-to actor, Viggo Mortensen, to tell the story of an aging performance artist whose partner…uses an eXistenZ style device to cut out the extra organs he grows regularly. As one does on a Tuesday evening.I am joined by the incredibly funny and thoughtful Gena Radcliffe (from Kill by Kill Podcast and AOAS’s very own White Ladies in Crisis) to go deep into this film’s message about aging, illness and disease, disability, and evolution.Connect with Gena> Instagram: @genadoesthings | Substack > Kill By Kill Podcast | Kill by Kill Patreon Want to share your thoughts on Crimes of the Future or suggest a film to cover? • 40. White Ladies in Crisis: The Girl On The Train (2016)

    56:50
Our journey into the realm of hot, messy women embroiled in murder mysteries continues with Tate Taylor's adaptation of Paula Hawkins' The Girl On The Train. Much like The Woman in the Window, the film stars an A-list actress (here it's Emily Blunt) doing great work in a lukewarm thriller.Plus: female archetypes, too complicated plotting, our desire for a miniseries, and comparisons to male-centric "prestige" pictures like OppenheimerWanna connect with the show?> Gena: @genadoesthings (Instagram/BlueSky)> Jenn: @jennferatu> Joe: @bstolemyremoteIf you like the podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe!
  • 39. Sexy & Surreal: Episode 21 - Lost Highway (1997)

    57:14
Terry and Joe finally hit one of former's most anticipated titles on the pod: David Lynch's surreal 1997 masterpiece, Lost Highway. This mind fuck of a film noir has true crime connections in Robert Blake, dual roles for Patricia Arquette, but makes the mistake of subbing out Bill Pullman for Balthazar Getty? Oof! Plus: impossible Hollywood houses, nightmare imagery, and wild speculations. • 38. Such Sights To Show: Episode 25 - Clive Barker's Nightbreed Archive

    47:11
Bryan and Joe return for the first of two episodes on Nightbreed comics. The first is a 400 page comic omnibus principally written by D.G. Chichester, including an adaptation of the Director's Cut of the film, the X-Men-esque "Blasphemers" arc, and (unbeknownst to us) a Nightbreed/Hellraiser cross-over!Plus: a rotating roster of artists, our favorite Blasphemer characters, and the Archive's casual (1990s) misogynyWanna connect with the show?> Bryan: @eviltaylorhicks (Instagram/BlueSky)> Joe: @bstolemyremoteMusic Credit: Hellraiser Theme by Christopher YoungCheck out Anatomy of a Scream Pod Squad for more great content and the other Network pods

  • 36. Bodies of Horror: Episode 71 - Night Swim (2024)

    54:13
Disabled folks who have by default a non-existent to low quality of life? Check. Disabled characters being a burden to loved ones? Check. Magical cures? Check.2024’s Night Swim is a layer cake of the disability tropes we know and love, so Nichole channels her simmering rage to give a refresher on some of them (since we circle them frequently here on the pod).Want to share your thoughts on Night Swim or suggest a film to cover? • 35. Sexy & Surreal: Episode 20 - M. Butterfly (1993)

    40:28
Terry and Joe tackle another challenging Cronenberg title with the adaptation of David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly (1993).Is this the straightest queer film ever? Although Jeremy Irons and John Lone are both doing great work, the film's reticence to engage with its gender, queer, and even political themes frustrates us to no end. By playing this realist and straight (in all senses of the word), the film is a bad marriage of director and material.Wanna connect with your co-hosts?> Terry: @gaylydreadful> Joe: @bstolemyremoteIf you like the podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe!Theme Music: Roniit - "Purify"
