Iowa Soldiers' Remains Return Home

Two Iowa National Guard soldiers, Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar and William Nathanial Howard, were laid to rest on Christmas Eve after being killed in a Syrian desert ambush. Their flag-draped caskets arrived at Des Moines International Airport, where they were met by Governor Kim Reynolds, Senator Joni Ernst, and Representative Zach Nunn. The soldiers were posthumously promoted to staff sergeant and served with the first Squadron, one hundred thirteenth Cavalry Regiment. A U.S. civilian interpreter, Ayad Mansoor Sakat, was also laid to rest after dying in the same ambush. Three other Iowa Guardsmen were wounded, with two returning to the U.S. for treatment.
