Above the Title: A Colin Farrell Podcast
Saving Mr. Banks (Part 1)
This week, the great Jeff Sweeney (of the Travolting podcast) joins us to look at failed Oscar contender Saving Mr. Banks, the deeply Disneyfied (and maybe evil?) biopic of Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers and her feuds with Walt over the famous 1963 film version. We grapple with our complicated feelings about the legacy of the Disney corporation, have an oddly contentious debate over Paul Giamatti's entire body of work, and reckon with a moving and close to home Colin Farrell performance as Travers' alcoholic father. Plus: deep dives into the careers of Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson (and a shorter drive-by on Jason Schwartzman). Cole can't remember who voiced the gargoyle in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Connor outlines his plan for worldwide economic collapse. Jeff gets a lot of mileage out of his Elvis impression.
Note: this is the first half of a two part episode, be sure to check your feed for the other half, dropping at the same time.

32. The Outrun
02:29:29||Season 2, Ep. 32This week, it's The Outrun, the 2024 movie that arrived in a wave of hype around Saoirse's Oscar chances but quickly disappeared after release. We talk gossip about the movie's production, the legacy of Nomadland, female star/producer auteurism, going 0 for 9 at the British Independent Film Awards, and Jack Lowden's career prospects.
31. Foe
02:13:52||Season 2, Ep. 31This week, we are obligated by the rules of the podcast to cover 2023's Foe, even though we don't want to. It's about a robot. It's really boring. And worst of all, Paul Mescal's in it. The great Sean Fahey asked to be on this for some reason, which is probably a cry for help. Enjoy.
64. Taylor Swift - "Patient Zero"
01:00:02||Season 1, Ep. 64EMERGENCY EPISODE - Colin Farrell was in a Taylor Swift video and we have thoughts/
30. See How They Run
02:35:06||Season 2, Ep. 30This week, we're taking a loopy look at See How The Run, an Agatha Christie riff set during the production of an Agatha Christie play that's one of a wave of post-Knives Out whodunnits. We talk the iffy performance of lead Sam Rockwell, Shirley Henderson supremacy, the possibility of a David Oyelowo comeback and, for some reason, car chases.
63. Sugar (Season 2)
02:23:53||Season 1, Ep. 63We're seeing double - four Sugars! That's right, it's a return to Colin Farrell this week, and a return to alien private eye John Sugar, with the second season of the television series that, distressingly, appears to be Colin's passion project. Listen in as we discuss TCM, Jack Reacher, the fundamentally flawed premise the show is stuck with, and the ups and downs of this slightly revamped narrative.
29. The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun
03:13:26||Season 2, Ep. 29This week, Mark Tilley returns for a discussion of The French Dispatch of The Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun (yes, that's the title), Wes Anderson's love letter to a generation of expatriate journalists in which Saoirse Ronan has a very, very small role. This is an oddly contentious episode given that all three of us love this movie, but it turns out we all love it in very specific, conflicting ways.
28. Ammonite
02:35:51||Season 2, Ep. 28This week, it's a meeting of two generations of precocious awards magnets with Ammonite, the Kate Winslet/Saoirse two-hander that was supposed to be one of the major Oscar players of 2020 but found itself, maybe more than anything else, completely kneecapped by the pandemic throwing the movie industry into chaos (doesn't help that it's not very good). Listen in as we discuss the... liberties the picture takes with its historical inspirations, the brief but notable wave of Sad Lesbian Period Dramas, the oddities of the COVID awards season, and of course a Winslet Rushmore. This movie is very dull.
27. Little Women
02:46:56||Season 2, Ep. 27This week, the great Sadie Rose Darwish returns to discuss Greta Gerwig's star-studded 2019 adaptation of Little Women, the movie that stands as the last major work of Saoirse's career (so far). Listen in as we dig into the Florence Pugh of it all, the Timothée Chalamet of it all, the Emma Watson of it all, and, somehow for the first time, the Meryl Streep of it all.
26. Mary Queen of Scots
01:57:10||Season 2, Ep. 26This week, it's yet another failed Saoirse Ronan Oscar contender: the long in development Mary Queen of Scots, a movie that is somehow both incredibly old fashioned and painfully of its moment. Topics include: post-Trump girlboss feminism, SAG/Oscar splits, white boys of the month Joe Alwyn and Jack Lowden, and Margot Robbie as Saoirse's tethered.
