Above the Title: A Colin Farrell Podcast

This week, Mark Tilley returns for a discussion of The French Dispatch of The Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun (yes, that's the title), Wes Anderson's love letter to a generation of expatriate journalists in which Saoirse Ronan has a very, very small role. This is an oddly contentious episode given that all three of us love this movie, but it turns out we all love it in very specific, conflicting ways.

This week, it's a meeting of two generations of precocious awards magnets with Ammonite, the Kate Winslet/Saoirse two-hander that was supposed to be one of the major Oscar players of 2020 but found itself, maybe more than anything else, completely kneecapped by the pandemic throwing the movie industry into chaos (doesn't help that it's not very good). Listen in as we discuss the... liberties the picture takes with its historical inspirations, the brief but notable wave of Sad Lesbian Period Dramas, the oddities of the COVID awards season, and of course a Winslet Rushmore. This movie is very dull.

This week, the great Sadie Rose Darwish returns to discuss Greta Gerwig's star-studded 2019 adaptation of Little Women, the movie that stands as the last major work of Saoirse's career (so far). Listen in as we dig into the Florence Pugh of it all, the Timothée Chalamet of it all, the Emma Watson of it all, and, somehow for the first time, the Meryl Streep of it all.

This week, it's yet another failed Saoirse Ronan Oscar contender: the long in development Mary Queen of Scots, a movie that is somehow both incredibly old fashioned and painfully of its moment. Topics include: post-Trump girlboss feminism, SAG/Oscar splits, white boys of the month Joe Alwyn and Jack Lowden, and Margot Robbie as Saoirse's tethered.

Over the course of her career, Saoirse Ronan has done a large number of short films, music videos, TV appearances, and other ephemera, all of which are too short on their own for a full episode but otherwise fall under the scope of this podcast. This week, we'll be taking a look at all her odds and ends, from her early days as an actor to what is, as of now, the most recent project in which she appears, anchored to a discussion of her sole gig hosting Saturday Night Live. And of course, if we're here to discuss a bunch of random nonsense, you know we had to bring the great Jeff Sweeney along for the ride.
