  • Sexual assault & violence against women: A societal crisis with a human solution.

    02:03:54
Humanity is currently facing a crisis. Women are falling victim to physical, sexual & emotional abuse at the hands of men & the statistics tell a sad story of a culture gone wrong.I spent the morning having a long form conversation with 2 of my best mates. We are certainly not experts, we don’t have all the answers but we wanted to start a conversation & create dialogue to develop our understanding, to be accountable for what needs to change & to lead the way for other men to do the same. We understand that the we can only try to empathise with women, but we can’t speak to their personal experiences as young men & because of that, we invite anyone listening to the episode or watching along to contribute to the conversation with feedback or their own perspective. Cultural change requires a collective effort. In this conversation, we discuss:- What does it mean to be a good man?- How we can take responsibility to create safer environments for women to live without looking over their shoulder or feeling uncomfortable in environments like the workplace, school & bars/clubs?- Redefining sexual abuse & giving clarity to what society has previously defined as a ‘grey area’.- Sharing the female perspectives of women we know & the work advocates like Chanel Contos are doing to help women call out in-appropriate behaviour & help men understand it. - The problematic narratives in media that creat further division instead of unity for positive change. & much more. James O’Connor burst onto the super rugby scene as a 17 year old & had his first Wallabies cap at the ripe age of 18. His early talent marked him a stand out for rugby fans & a target for the Australian media. As a young man mistakes are inevitable & James’ often made for good headlines on the back page & a tirade of criticism. Both of which hugely influenced his decision to step outside of Australia & explore career opportunities in Europe for a number of years. Now back on home soil, it’s clear that James has made peace with himself & ultimately has nothing to prove, yet a lot to show for the journey he has been on. His 16 year career has been one of many twists & turns.
